Best Of The Decade List...

The (London) Times has released a best pop albums of the noughties list. Click HERE for an interesting flick through.

I was surprised to learn I actually own 21 of them. Of this 21, after living with them for a while, I feel I can give a quick personal view:

12 SONGS (yeah, it's good)

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS (very good)
BROKEN BOY SOLDIERS (didn't float my boat)
WE SHALL OVERCOME (good)

"LOVE & THEFT" (very good)
WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT (Tops!)
YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS (good)
FUNERAL (good)
STORIES FROM THE CITY, STORIES FROM THE SEA (okay-ish)
NIXON (good)
MAGIC (okay)
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM (very good)
THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN (didn't light my flame)
FLEET FOXES (doesn't get my vote)

A Terrible Beauty...

I went to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin to take in their Francis Bacon exhibition yesterday (click here for details). I'm no art expert at all but this was a really well put together retrospective with plenty to view and, indeed, listen too.

First of all you can take in a brief biography of the Irish born Englishman, then you can watch a Melvyn Bragg interview with the man himself. After this you get to see his actual studio recreated in one of the rooms (this is actually a permanent fixture donated by the Bacon estate to the Gallery).

Next up is the cuttings of myriad photo-books, magazines etc. used by the artist for research, inspiration & method. After this is canvasses that he never used and/or tore up (a bit like listening to a bootleg of recording outtakes by a singer). This is followed by an interview with his sister that is projected onto a wall (on loop).

Finally is a collection of works of finished pieces by Bacon.

Two hours plus just flew by.... and it's free.

"Frontline" Ambush...

Ex-€900k a year man Pat Kenny has been providing us with more "Partridge" moments this week. Here his suitability as a credible investigator of the excesses of boom-time Ireland, and dealing with an economy now bust, gets questioned:

Note: Watch the grey haired lady behind the speaker. She just wishes she was someplace else :-)

Something's Gotta Give...

Every Irish newspaper, tv and media outlet has been discussing the cutting of social welfare payments and public sector wage bills for the past three months. I have never heard of public sector wages being actually cut nor dole payouts being reduced before; and never thought I would.

Its now just one month to D-Day and discussions are still going on but the equation doesn't change.

The State doesn't have the money and nobody is stepping forward to give up their money. It looks an impossible situation for a compromise so the Government will just have to make a decision.

Are we in for a winter of discontent or will the country just grin and bear it? I think the latter but I'm not betting on it!

Look at Pat Kenny's face at the end of this clip. Hilarious!
